Healthy Heart Month – Ulcer Wound Care

Healthy circulation is at the heart of every healed wound

For healthy heart month we want to draw attention to the important role circulation plays in wound healing. When there are issues with circulation, patients can be at risk for the development of venous ulcers and arterial ulcers.

Arterial ulcers are typically seen with coronary and peripheral artery disease, which causes a buildup of plaque that can reduce or block the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients needed for wound healing.

A venous ulcer occurs due to fluid retention in

the legs caused by a faulty valve in the circulatory system. The fluid retention damages tissue, often resulting in a venous ulcer.

25% of the wounds we treat are venous or arterial ulcers.
